Puppies do have a tendency to get constipated, especially if you happen to have a smaller breed. If you happy to have a little guy that seems to not be going as often as you feel that he should, you need to make sure that you take care of this right away. This can turn into a very serious matter if he is not able to go to the bathroom as much as he should be going. You can treat mild constipation at home but if it gets really bad, a vet is where you will have to end up taking the poor little guy.
First thing you should check is to make sure that he has plenty of water, you should have a couple of bowls in the area in which he most often sleeps and plays. Keep an eye on him to see if he's drinking as much as he needs. You should make sure that he gets at no less than one ounce of water for each pound of weight that he is. If you see that he tends not to drink the water then you are going to have to add some water to his food each day so that he'll get it that way. Make sure that he also is able to go outside often to be able to go outside, he may not want to go if he is not let out, because he's afraid he'll get in trouble if he goes indoors. It's also important that you play with your puppy often and it should be several 20 minute play periods during the day. This will help keep all of his bodily functions working properly.
Make sure that you are giving him the right food and that his diet is furnishing him with all the nutritional requirements needed for a puppy. It's also important that you pay close attention to his breed, some breeds have different requirements. Make sure to check with your vet to see what the best diet would be for your puppy.
If your puppy has long hair, make sure that he doesn't have any matted hair by his rear end. This could be the problem and it could be causing a blockage. If there are any mats it's a good idea for you to cut this matted hair away from his back side.
You might want to add a little bit of milk to his diet. Even though usually a vet is against giving puppies milk because it may cause diarrhea, in this case you are going to want all the help you can get. So if you give him about an 1/8 of a cup of milk two times a day this could easily help to get rid of the constipation. Another thing you can do is add a ½ a teaspoon of olive oil to his food for a few days and see if that helps.
Don't give him any bones. The milk bone type dog bones should be kept away from him because they may be blocking his digestive system. This also includes the rawhide ones as well. So it's important to keep these away from your puppy during times of constipation.
